Week 1 Round-up

Hi everyone,
Welcome back to school!
We have had such a busy week.

Here are some of the highlights!

Art

We have been learning some sketching skills and techniques

 The start of Khushi's Zebra

Shaydn's eye sketch

Victoria's Minion

Maths

We have been learning some of the different features of different kinds of graphs.

Oskar's Bar Graph

Ruby's Pie Graph

Writing

We have been writing some stories from the perspective of an animal or object on it's average day.
The students were trying to give the reader clues about what creature or object they were without saying what it was.

Connor's awesome story

A day in my life
My clock goes off. Tweet, tweet, tweet! I hit it with my leg and it stops. I get out of my leafy bed and I go into the kitchen. My wife caught a fly for breakfast. After a nice breakfast, I go into the bathroom to brush my fangs and then I go to work. My boss says that I am the Hunter of the Month! I built a web so we can sit on it’s soft silk. After a nice days hunting, I return home. For lunch, me and my wife had a paper wasp. I accidently ate it’s stinger. I had to go to the doctors. The doctor said that I have to be more careful. After that, we noticed our babies had hatched. For dinner, my wife had a bee, and I ate a ladybug (remember what the doctor said). For dessert, we had a glass of venom. Then we had a bath in the pond. We brushed our fangs and went to bed. What a good day!

Reading

We have been learning how to summarise what we have read. This is an important reading skill.
We are practicing so we can prove that we have read for our reading log. Come in and check it out!

Fact of the Day

Did you know, Jupiter is covered in swirling gas clouds, so it looks different every day. The largest gas is called the great red spot. This is a storm  that is bigger than earth and has lasted for hundreds of years.

What an amazing fact!

Tuesday Fact of the Day

The anglerfish has a fleshy organ, called the esca, that sticks out of its body like a fishing rod. It uses this organ to lure prey close enough for it to attack.

What an interesting fact!

Election Update

The class ballots have been tallied and there is an outright new Room 12 Prime Minister.
However, this person will be charged with creating a government tomorrow and attempting to meet to get some policy through.

Tomorrow all kids will be assigned to a political party, based on the number of party votes each team received. The teams will need to work together to try and implement their policies, and I imagine that compromise will be a word we practice this week.

I can't wait to see what happens!

Postcard Week 9

Well done to Victoria who was the postcard earner this week.
Victoria gives her very best to everything that she does!
She is an absolutely amazing class member, who is an excellent leader, but an equally good team member. I am so proud of her!

Pirate day was a raging success this Friday with most people dressing up.
The fierce trio above are Georgia, Liske and Tia.

Election week

This week, Room 12 will be holding a mock election for a class prime minister.

Today students were allowed to form their own "parties" and had to find a way to choose the leader of their party.
They will also be campaigning on some ideas to try and get their classmates to vote for them. There were many interesting and good ideas coming from the groups. There will be speech writing, a mock debate and some more interesting activities.

This is very topical learning, and will hopefully help the students gain some understanding of how the government is structured, and also the tough choices that adults have to make when deciding who to vote for.

Homework Week 9

Hi everyone,

Please remember that your homework this week is to prepare for the end of week quiz. Each day you will find out two of the categories so that you can get practicing.

There will be a big quiz on Friday which you can earn fern dollars in. Fern dollars are extra important this week because this Friday is the catalogue ordering day.

You will be working on your own, and the harder you practice this week, the better you will do on the quiz.
