Matariki

We had an awesome time at Matariki today.
We started with a performance by a Maori dance company, which was amazing.
Then we all went to different places to learn about different things. There was flax weaving, poi making, kite making, rakau, outdoor sports, waiata and string games.
Here are some pictures.

Did you know......
If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days, you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee.

That is less than half of ours.

Homework Week 7

You might remember that we had a memory challenge for homework last term. It was about flowers. It is now Term 2's memory challenge week. This week is all about flags.

There are twenty flags with the country of them written next to it.
On Friday there will be a quiz to see how many you can memorise.
Mrs Love will pay 1 fern dollar for every correct answer, plus an $80 bonus for anyone who manages to get all twenty correct.

It is your responsibility.

Good luck!

Fact of the Day

The fact of the day was found by Victoria.

Edible flowers aren't a new phenomenon, but garnishes of fresh flowers tend to intimidate diners. No one is really sure if the flowers are there for decoration or to be eaten. Even if they are to be eaten, diners often wonder if they will taste good, or like parsley, be better left on the plate.

World Cup Update

The next games are being played today.

Mexico beat Cameroon 1-0.
Netherlands thrashed Spain 5-1.
Chile beat Australia 3-1, although the game did seem closer than the score is.

Postcard Week 6: Campbell

Well done to Campbell who received the postcard for this week.

One of his greatest strengths is that he will really work hard to meet a goal, and this was one of the main things that earned him this postcard.
Another thing that Campbell is excellent at is making good choices for himself, even in the playground when his friends might not be.
His behaviour and attitude have been fantastic this week as well.
Keep up the amazing work Campbell!

Super Shaydn supports splendidly

Shaydn made this awesome poster about Lionel Messi, who is in the Argentina team that Shaydn is supporting for the Fifa World Cup. He did it for homework, and just for fun.
Awesome job Shaydn!

Fifa World Cup

Tomorrow the Fifa Football World Cup starts.
We have been doing some work in class to do with this.

We have each made a flag, and researched information about the country we are supporting, and today we made replicas of the playing strip of each of our teams.

We were also lucky enough to have a wall chart made for us that will help us to track our team's progress against other countries (and other classmates!).

We have been using this website to keep up to date with our research and news.

http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/

It is a huge website, with lots of interesting information.
Check it out again!

Did you know that dolphins have a large variance in size?
The smallest is 1.12m (shorter than the people in our class), and weighs about 40kg. The smallest is the Maui's dolphin.
The largest is up to 9.5m (longer than our classroom) can weigh up to 10 tonnes! That's huge!

The dolphin eats mainly fish and squid.

Mrs Love's postcard

Today when I got home from school, I was surprised to see that I had a postcard! It came in the mail from an old student and I was so excited to read it!

I wonder who will earn this week's postcard. Who do you think is a good role model for behaviour, attitude and learning?

Sporting Superstars

On Saturday, Jono and I were lucky enough to get to watch just a few of the sporting superstars in action.
All 5 of the kids we saw were doing a fantastic job, giving their very best, showing PRIDE and displaying their excellent skills. Awesome work!

Fact of the Day

Today's fact of the day was found by Mya.

Did you know that the average person laughs 10 times a day?

Laughing is really good for your body and mind, and it can be hard to remember that when times get stressful. You could post a funny joke to help everyone get another number on the laugh tally.

Postcard Week 5

Deciding the postcard was tough this week as I was only there for two days! Poor Georgia was only there for one, and Emma only for half! However, I did get some good feedback from Mrs Ferguson, and there was some outstanding work from some kids at the end of the week. Some kids were just unlucky!

Well done to Victoria who did deserve the postcard this week. We have a sign at school that says some of the things you should do and be to earn the postcard, and Victoria absolutely is this everyday.
She always gives her personal best with her school work and she is so impressive with her behaviour and her attitude. She loves a challenge and always tries to help others. Victoria is such a great role model. We are very lucky to have her in Room 12.
